What is Tolerance? Now, in your own words, answer these questions and turn in for a grade: When manufacturing items in a factory, can every part be completely, exactly, the same size every time? How do engineers overcome this limitation of factories? (starts with a T) Write this sentence with the correct words: Tolerances are expressed as the m__ allowable and the m_ allowable, and everything in between.

Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Definitions Tolerance is the total variance in a dimension and is equal to the difference between the upper and lower limits. Tolerance = Upper Limit – Lower Limit 0.10 = 1.55 – 1.45 If a part is manufactured outside of the limits established by the tolerance, the part is said to be “out of tolerance”.
4
Definitions Limits are the maximum and minimum sizes shown by the toleranced dimension Upper limit is the maximum allowable dimension Lower limit is the minimum allowable dimension Upper Limit = Specified Dimension + positive variance 1.55 = Lower Limit = Specified Dimension + negative variance 1.45 = (– 0.05)
