General Tips Do not start with the words:
Because Yes No Do not end with the words from a quote, end with your own words. You are proving that you understand what you read, so don’t give an opinion, unless you give examples from the reading itself.

General Tips Find 3-5 pieces of evidence that answers the question before you begin answering. Pick the evidence (1-2) that works best or is the strongest (most relevant). Think through your answer before you start writing. Write a rough draft. You will have time. (It’s only 10 lines. Don’t be lazy.)

“Be better off drawing pictures that will make money.” “Tell me about my mom.” Rude response. “we weren’t close.” “He loved showing off how handy he was and proving that anything I did was wrong.” Vladek yelled and blamed Art for no reason “He had aged a lot since I saw him last.”

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus?
Art and Vladek’s relationship is judgmental. The reader becomes aware of this when Art describes his father as, loving “…showing off how handy he was and proving that anything I did was wrong.” He also feels judged in his career choice because his father tells him, you would “Be better off drawing pictures that will make money.” Clearly, Art and Vladek’s relationship is characterized by judging one another.

Vladek and Art’s have a judgmental relationship. Vladek doesn’t think that Art’s coat is good enough and throws it out without talking to Art about it. Art also judges his father for picking up random things on the street to use. He complains, “You always pick up trash! Can’t you buy wire?” Clearly, both Art and Vladek judge one another.

The relationship between Vladek and Art is dysfunctional. When Vladek knocks over his pills, he immediately blames Art for the mistake. Art doesn’t enjoy being blamed for other’s mistakes which explains why he says, “We weren’t that close.” The reader discovers many more reasons for their dysfunction, including Art’s mother’s suicide and long periods without seeing each other.

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus?
Vladek and his son Art have a distant relationship filled with tension. When Art first goes to visit his father, he mentions that they, “…weren’t that close.” (p.13) The reader continues to sense the tension and distance by Art smoking in front of his father with heart problems. This displays a direct lack of concern for his father’s health.
