A topic (your author and books he/she wrote) Research (info printed & copied) Questions (basic and deep) How do you use the information you gathered to take notes which will lead to an organized paper about your author’s life and his/her works?

3 Step by Step… Step by step you get the information you need to answer your questions.

4 Step by Step Step 1: Read the article from beginning to end.
Step 2: Have your Question sheet handy. Step 3: Underline key words and phrases that answer your questions. (Sometimes the answer is not direct but the information leads you to an answer.)

6 Step by Step Step 4: Label the info you underlined
Use the Questions sheet to help Put your labels in the margins Example: A.1. is about the author’s Life – specifically his/her childhood C.1. is about the author’s Writing - specifically his/her technique

7 Helpful Hints Do: Underline key words and phrases in pencil
Underline a sentence here or there ONLY IF you need the entire sentence for a direct quote

8 Helpful Hints Do: Refer to a dictionary (online or book) as you read the articles Look up words you do not understand

9 Helpful Hints Do Not: Underline entire paragraphs or large chunks of information Underline words you do not understand Color code yet

10 Read and Label all articles
By following the 4 steps you will prepare to take notes online. Use class time to follow the 4 steps on the AAYA or SATA article. HW: Finish reading and labeling the AAYA or SATA article plus 1 or 2 more (internet, Gale-Grolier-SIRS) ***Parent’s initial and date articles you do at home***
