What is geography? Geography is the study of EVERYTHING on Earth, from rocks and rainfall to people and places. How the natural environment influences people People’s affect on Earth and how it is changing Cities, cultures, plants and resources Where these things are or where related events happen

Geographer’s Perspective
Perspective – the way a person looks at something Look for patterns where things are located and how they are arranged Explain patterns Landscapes – scenery of a place (physical, human and cultural features)

Two Main Branches Human Geography Physical Geography
Distribution and characteristics of the world’s people Live, work, manufacture, create, trade Physical Geography Focuses on Earth’s natural environments Landforms, water features, atmosphere, animals, plants, soils, processes

Subfields Cartography – study of maps and map making
Meteorology – study of weather Many work for government agencies (USGS) Businesses hire for new markets Tourism, travel and international sales TEACHERS (most importantly, of course)
