1 INVALUABLE! Mendez GATE Symposium 2014

2 What is a GATE Symposium?
A chance for our GATE and Honors students to show what they are interested in. A chance for you to show your hard work. A chance for you to develop your research skills. A chance for you to explore the things that interests you and discover how it affects the world around you.

3 INVALUABLE! Our symposium focuses on the ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
What is the UNIVERSAL THEME resulting from this project and how might this project add VALUE to our society?

4 Let’s say that again! What is the UNIVERSAL THEME resulting from this project AND how might this project add VALUE to our society? (This means: What is the message from your project and how will your project make our society better?)

5 What do I need to do? You will choose what topic interests you and make sure the topic crosses into other subjects you know. You will eventually have to find a Universal Theme that fits your project, and define a Value that shows how your projects helps society. You will meet with at least TWO mentor teachers that will help to guide you. You must meet with them at least three times. You will develop your ides in a way that is unique to YOU! You will present your work on the day of the symposium.

6 SUBJECTS TO THINK ABOUT!
Hmmm… Maybe I can use some of these!

7 What do I need to do first?
First you need to fill out an intent to participate form. Choose your partners or choose to work by yourself. Then, choose your mentor teachers. Next, choose your topic. Think about the BIG IDEA you want to show about your topic. Then, think about what other subjects your topic can connect with. Finally, have your first meeting with your mentor. They will help steer you in the right direction as you discuss your ideas with them.

8 What will I need? For now, you need to fill out the intent to register. Then you will receive a Symposium handbook that will have more instructions. All of the deadlines, and guidelines will be in your handbook, as well as the Universal Themes and Values.

9 When and Where is the Symposium?

10 Is there anything else I need to know?
