My Workplace Picture Picture Picture
My workplace is the Brewster Law Office. Here they represent people who have issues with criminal law, family law and immigration law. This workplace is a small business. My workplace is located at 580 Grand Avenue, Suite 204. It’s a big building next to Gold’s Gym. There are three people who work here. My workplace does not employ many people. It is basically just two attorneys who work here and they have one assistant. Most people that work here have 4-year degrees and law degrees. My workplace serves anyone who is in need of an attorney for a criminal case, family law case, or immigration case. The strengh at my workplace is that we have a very good defense attorney in Cecily Brewster. Picture Picture Picture

My Mentor Cecily Brewster: She is a defense attorney who provides legal services for criminal law, family law and immigration law. Saskia Levy-Sheon: Cecily Brewster’s assistant. She answers phones and sets up appointments for Cecily Brewster. Their typical day is mostly busy. Ms. Brewster usually has court all day and if she is not in court she is preparing for court, or having meetings with potential people she may represent. For Saskia her day is also busy. She is constantly answering phones and she does whatever Ms. Brewster asks of her. Cecily Brewster went to Loyola law school in Los Angeles where she was a Loyola scholar and graduated from the university of California, Berkeley in 1997 with an AB in English lit.

At my workplace I did not exactly have a title, I just did what ever Ms. Brewster asked of me. The tasks I had to do when working at my workplace were looking through files as well as taking notes on what I learned from the files. A regular day for me was i would go in at about 10, I would look through files to start the day until about 12:30. Then I had to check the mail. Then we went to lunch at about 1. After lunch, my mentor would give me some errands to run. Then I left around 3:30. Picture of you doing something Picture Picture

My WLE Project My Project Plan My Project in Action

My Project Plan My Statement of purpose: Depth Breadth Longevity
The purpose of this project is to help my mentor learn more about the divorce process and how to fill out files. Also, this project is to help future interns who are interning at the Brewster Law office learn about the divorce process. Depth This project is really important because my mentor Cecily Brewster is very busy and for future interns she does not have enough time to teach every intern about the process of getting divorced. By looking in the manual I am creating, future interns will all they need to know about divorces cases. Breadth My mentors Saskia and Cecily will be impacted by this project because it will make their jobs easier in the future. Doing this project also impacts me because it is helping me learn useful information about family law that I may need to know in the future. Longevity This project will take around 7 weeks. This project will be able to be used forever, for all the future interns who have the opportunity to intern at the Brewster law office.

My Project Plan Project Action Items and Calendar
At the Brewster Law Office, being that they primarily serve family law and criminal law cases, my mentor Saskia and I decided that for my WLE project we would make a up a fake divorce case going through all the steps of getting legally divorced. We are doing this to help my mentor as well as myself learn more about the divorce process and because my mentor needed the practice. After doing this divorce case, I will make a guide for divorce cases for the intern manual using what I have learned from this. This project helps my WLE workplace because it will help future interns understand the divorce process. This project helps me because it will help me learn the divorce process, and also how to fill out divorce papers just in case I may need to know how to do this in the future. My Project in Action Picture Picture
For my project I made a fake divorce case with my mentor Saskia going through all the steps and filing out all the forms to get divorced. Then using the information I learned from doing the divorce case I made a divorce guide which will be put in the intern manual. . For the final result for my project I filled out all my divorce forms, Then I did the divorce guide which came out to be 31/2 pages just going through all the steps you will need to know how to do to get divorced. The main person who helped me with my project was Saskia. She helped me by being the woman in my divorce case. She also looked over all my divorce forms to make sure they were filled out correctly. She proof read my divorce guide and gave me suggestions on how I could make it better. Nothing really went wrong in my project. Towards the end of my project I realized that I could not finish it all at my W.L.E. so I had to do a lot of the divorce manual at home, but other than that the project went very smoothly. Reflection My Project’s Results Leadership Skills
What I Learned About Myself, this Profession, and Work Professionalism and Finding a Job Big Picture
11
My Project’s Results I feel that my project was successful. I got all of it done and in doing this I learned from it and was also able to help my workplace out in return using the information I learned. In doing this project I learned how to correctly fill out divorce forms, and also what a lot of the forms do. I also learned what the difference between an un-contested judgment and a contested judgment is. If I could have done my project again I would have took more time to really understand everything I was doing and do more research so I could learn more about family law. My project benefits me because it thought me how to properly fill out divorce forms as well as thought me about the divorce process in general in case I need to know it in the future. My project helps out my workplace because from the information I learned in doing my divorce case I was able to use what I learned to make a divorce guide for future interns, so they can have an easier time learning.

Leadership Skills Complete Project Effectively Communicate Powerfully
The leadership skill I used the most was probably complete project effectively, because I got the project done on time and it is well-done, and in doing this project I was learning. This leadership skill helped me complete my project because if I did not complete my project effectively then I would have not been learning from my project and I feel if I was not learning from my project then it would not have been useful to me, but I feel because I was learning from doing my project that it was very useful for me and productive for myself and my workplace. My mentor uses Communicate powerfully because I feel that when being a lawyer you have to communicate in a powerful way by speaking with confidence towards the job because you have to convince the judge that what your saying is correct in order for you to win the case, At my W.L.E. I did not really use my leadership skills. I think the only skill I used was completing project effectively when working on my project. I did not communicate powerfully I have been told that I mumble when I talk and that I need to speak with more confidence. So this is the skill I need to work on going forward. Complete Project Effectively Communicate Powerfully

Reflection: What I Learned…
About Myself The challenges that I faced working at my W.L.E. was speaking, this was a big issue. I was told that I mumble and do not speak with confidence. This was helpful information for me because personally I did not realize that I mumbled. I am a shy person but going forward this is a skill that I will work on and hopefully get better at. In doing my W.L.E. project my creativity was put to use because when making up the divorce case I had to make everything up off the top of my head, like my profession, how many kids I had, what kind of house I had, and how much money. So in all my creativity was put to use a lot. About this Profession In being at my W.L.E. I realized that this is a really important job I did not realize before that an attorney was so important, they can get you out of jail and they can also get you good deal in a family law case. Also they are always busy I did not know their was so much work involved in being a lawyer, Being around my mentor I noticed she is always busy , always in and out of court and when she is not in court she is preparing for court. A specific skill I was able to do while being at my workplace was looking through files on closed cases and interpreting what happened in the cases I looked over. About the World of Work If someone asked me if what I did at my W.L.E. was important I would say yes because by me looking through files or researching family law it helped me create the divorce guide that my workplace will be able to use for all interns in years to come. The things I have learned from my W.L.E. will help me in the years to come because it showed me how the family law cases work so it will help me make a good decision and really makes me think about if I want to get married. But just in case I do and I end up getting divorced I will know how to fill out the forms needed.

Reflection: What I learned…
About Professionalism As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means you are able take affective criticism. You are also opened minded because to be a defense attorney you can not let your personal opinion interfere with the job ahead which is trying to get this person out of jail or get them a good settlement in a divorce case. About Finding a Job In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to well for I knew that I wanted to do something that would be useful for my future and because I had been thinking about majoring in Criminal Justice in college, and I happened to have a friend who’s mom was an attorney so I asked him if she took interns and he told me she did, so basically he got me the opportunity. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by calling the workplace respectfully and professionally and being persistent about working there, you have to show the workplace that you truly want to be there and give them a reason why they should hire you over any other applicants they have.

Reflection: Big Picture…
After my one on one evaluation I feel like I improved as an intern because actually started trying to learn about family law in particularly and started doing research at home by myself. In the long run this made my project even better. My final thoughts about my W.L.E. is that this is a great place to intern at if you really want to learn about family law or criminal law, but you really have to go in with the attitude that you want to be there and show that you want to be there. I personally wanted to be there but did not show that I wanted to be there because of my shyness. Because of this I do not feel I took in everything that I may have been able to take in, but in all it was a good experience for me. SENIORS: This experience will definitely affected my decisions and goals because I will be more cautious getting into a marriage because I know what can happen once you get divorced. As far as goals being here made me change my mind in terms of the major I want to be in, in college I had wanted to major in criminal justice but from being at my W.L.E. I decided that this is not the major for me so I will need to pick a new one.
