Motion & Forces 6. Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
2
Newton’s 2nd Law is the law of motion, force, and acceleration
Force = Mass Acceleration F = MA
3
Newton’s 2nd Law pertains to forces that are unbalanced
Motion is occurring
4
The 2nd law states that acceleration is dependent on 2 variables
Force acting on an object (F) Mass of the object (M)
5
and inversely on the mass of the object
The acceleration of an object depends directly on the force acting on the object and inversely on the mass of the object More M Less A Less A More M
6
When one player checks another the force that the player gets hit with
is the product of the other players acceleration and mass
7
Force Mass Acceleration (N) (kg) (m/s/s) 10 2 20 4 5
8
What net force is needed to accelerate a 55 kg cart at 15 m/s2?
Remember: Force = Mass Acceleration Force = 55 kg 15 m/s2 Force = 825 Newtons
9
Force = Mass Acceleration
A 52 kg water-skier is being pulled by a speedboat. The force causes her to accelerate 2 m/s2. What is the net force that causes the acceleration? Force = Mass Acceleration Force = 52 kg 2 m/s2 Force = 104 Newtons
