Postcolonial Religion
Religion was not mentioned often. Talk of God did come up once: “God – who in that part of London society was of course firmly held to be an Englishman...” (78 Winchester). “The equation was really very simple, a formula for undoubted global good: The more English there was in the world. The more God-fearing its peoples would be.” (78 Winchester). “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them” (BibleGateway).

Colonial Oppression Women in Lambeth Often resorted to prostitution
Similar to Anne Hathaway in Les Misérables “The worst off of all of the women were the underclass women. These women maintained a very different lifestyle than the others. Their clothes often consisted of dirty and torn skirts and blouses, and messy hair. Deprived of any form of education and respected jobs, these underprivileged women mostly relied on relief organizations and some even resorted to prostitution to make a living for themselves when there was no other alternative.” (Smith).

Colonial Oppression Continued
Due to lack of education some women were illiterate A creator of a earlier, much smaller scale ‘Dictionary’ implies: “ He had compiled it, he said, “for the benefit & help of Ladies, gentlewomen or any other unskilful persons...” (84 Winchester).
