Making it Easy: Health Literacy Outcomes to improve social care
Wednesday 26th Oct. Grassmarket Centre Applying health literacy principles in Self-directed Support Parallel Session Self-directed support (SDS) is about empowering individuals to have choice and control over their care support. Key to this is ensuring that individuals understand the options that are available to them. A recent report from SDS Scotland* highlighted that only 44% of people receiving support had heard of SDS and 34% said that they did not understand the options well enough to make a decision. This session discusses how we can use health literacy tools such as “teachback” and “chunk and check” to ensure that information about SDS is explained well and understood. Description What will be discussed in the session We will consider what the key barriers are to communicating SDS options to individuals with learning disabilities and memory issues and think of how these can be overcome. We will demonstrate a draft pathway tool that we have developed which uses health literacy principles, to make it easier to communicate SDS information to these target groups. We will be asking for feedback and suggestions on how this pathway can be developed further. Key Partners Further information The pathway has been developed by NHS Education, Renfrewshire Council, Voluntary Action Group and East Renfrewshire SDS Forum. * Name: Janet Crozier Role: SDS Knowledge Manager Organisation: NHS Education for Scotland Contact Details: 1
