1 Systems Architecture & Design Lecture 1 Introduction
Brian E. White, Ph.D. 13 April 2010 Version 5 (v5) 1

2 Definitions DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) IEEE 1471*
The structure of components, their relationships, and the principles and guidelines governing their design and evolution over time IEEE 1471* The fundamental organization of a system embodied in its components, their relationships to each other, and to the environment, and the principles guiding its design and evolution. * IEEE 1471 – “Recommended Practice for Architectural Description of Software-Intensive Systems” 2

3 Definitions Architecture provides
Structure and mechanisms for knowledge transfer Mutually consistent orthogonal views or models of the problem and solution space Common definitions, data, and frame of reference Predictive capability to support operational planning and investment decisions Performance assessment, interoperability, and control logic validation through executable architectures A continuum for system of systems (SoS) design

4 Presentation 1 Assignment (due 18 May)
Find an example in the literature (i.e., web search), or from your experience, of an actual architecture representation, DoDAF, MoDAF, TOGAF, Zachman, or FEA Present and discuss at least five distinctive architectural views from that example Brian White with your architecture choice by 4 May Duplicates not permitted; first come, first served So… start on this soon! If you can’t find anything, Brian will try to provide it, but you will lose 5 points from your graded score

5 Systems Architecture & Design Lecture 2 Systems Modeling Language (SysML)
Brian E. White, Ph.D. 20 April 2010 Version 3 (v3)

6 About Object Management Group* (OMGTM)
OMG is an international, open membership, not-for-profit computer industry consortium OMG Task Forces develop enterprise integration standards for a wide range of technologies and industries OMG’s modeling standards enable powerful visual design, execution and maintenance of software and other processes OMG’s middleware standards and profiles are based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA®) and support a wide variety of industries Any organization may join OMG and participate in their standards-setting process Their one-organization-one-vote policy ensures that every organization, large and small, has an effective voice All of their specifications may be downloaded without charge What is middleware? ___________ * For definitions, refer to:

7 OMG SysML™ Specification Status
Refer to: FYI: non-OMG (unofficial) training sites SysML adopted by OMG in May 06 Original SysML specification (v1.0) in Sep 07 SysML revision (v1.1) in Dec 08

8 System of Systems (SoS)
What do you think of this chart?!
