1 Be ready to look at your quiz from Friday.
Bell work Be ready to look at your quiz from Friday.

2 Physical or Chemical Changes SPI 0807.9.8
Success Criteria: I can tell the difference between a chemical and physical change. TOC: #10. Physical or Chemical Changes notes

3 Physical or chemical change Brainpop

4 Physical Changes A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties. Changes the appearance of an object, but does not change the composition of the object. In other words, the way it looks is changed, but what it is does not change. (kind of like dressing up for a costume party) Physical changes do not form new substances. Can be fairly easily undone or reversed

5 Physical Changes: changes the appearance of an object, but does not actually change the composition of the object Physical Changes DO NOT Form New Substances Physical Changes Two Examples

6 H2O H2O H2O Physical Change:
It looks different, but is still the same material. No chemical reaction has occurred. Example: Changes of state/phase ARE NOT chemical reactions In other words, liquid to solid to gas are only physical changes Water Vapor Liquid Water Solid Water H2O H2O H2O

7 Examples of Physical Change Melting Freezing Boiling Cutting Crushing
Tearing Breaking Smashing Dissolving In every example here, the appearance is changed, but the composition remains the same. No Chemical Change!

8 Physical Change Examples
For each of these examples, the appearance is changed, but the composition remains the same. Melting Freezing No Chemical Change! Boiling

9 Physical Change Examples
Cutting For each of these examples, the appearance is changed, but the composition remains the same. Crushing No Chemical Change! Tearing

10 Physical Change Examples
Breaking For each of these examples, the appearance is changed, but the composition remains the same. Smashing No Chemical Change! Dissolving

11 Chemical Change Is the result of a chemical reaction & a new substance is formed Can not be easily undone or reversed Some Chemical Change Indicators There may be a change in odor Heat may be given off It may explode It may fizz, foam , flash, or flame Sound may be heard (snap, crackle, pop, sizzle, bang, boom) Light may be given off It may change color Also, it may form a solid substance called a precipitate

Brain Break! Stand up, do 10 jumping jacks, then high five one of your neighbors.

13 Chemical Change Example
Iron and oxygen react to form a compound called iron oxide. Color Change: From silvery-gray to red-orange-brown 1966 VW Beetle Bare Metal-No Paint 1966 VW Beetle Rusting away Chemical Equation Fe + 3O FeO3

14 Chemical Change Example
Copper + oxygen react to form a compound called copper oxide. Color Change: From golden-brown to aqua-marine green Statue of Liberty Original look-1886 Statue of Liberty Modern look-2014 Also Called Rust Chemical Equation 4Cu + O Cu2O

15 Chemical Change Example 10Al + 6NH4ClO4 4Al2O3 + 2AlCl3 + 12H2O + 3N2
The Space Shuttle used solid rocket propellant called APCP Space Shuttle (USA) Lift Off Chemical Equation 10Al + 6NH4ClO Al2O3 + 2AlCl H2O + 3N2

16 Chemical Change Example 3NaHCO3 + C6H8O7 Na3C6H5O7 + 3CO2 + 3H2O
Upset stomach? You can take Alka Seltzer effervescent tablets Chemical Equation 3NaHCO3 + C6H8O Na3C6H5O CO H2O

17 Chemical Change Example
Soured milk is the result of a chemical reaction Chemical Equation C12H22O11 + H2O C3H6O3
