I. The Protectorate under Oliver Cromwell
A. Cromwell abolishes monarchy & forms a commonwealth B. Cromwell travels to Scotland & Ireland, kills thousands C. Upon return, Cromwell disagrees w/ Parliament 1. Cromwell dismisses Parliament creates own constitution and becomes Lord Protector D. Since Cromwell controlled the army, he had power 1. Cromwell began Puritan reforms a. II. The Restoration of the Monarchy
A. Cromwell dies, Richard Cromwell becomes ruler 1. Richard was a weak leader with little support B. Parliament overthrows Richard’s government C. Asks Charles II to become the new King of England D. Restoration begins when Charles II accepts E. Charles II will return rights to people, incl. Habeas Corpus F. Charles’ brother, James II, succeeds Charles 1. However, Puritans opposed James since he was a Catholic
