Fouling of boats, ships, buoys, and other man-made structures, aquaculture ropes and floats used in oyster and mussel culture. Rapid growth and large size. Can replace other species.

Especially during mass developments, the crab has an enormous predatory impact on local species. The nature of the food consumed varies per life stage. The pelagic larvae consume both phytoplankton and zooplankton and once settled feed on hydroids. Adult crabs prey upon a large variety of species. Crabs in the by-catch of local fishermen cause concern as they damage fishing gear in gillnet, longline and trap fisheries.

The seastar is considered a serious pest of native marine organisms, it establish large populations in new areas, is a voracious feeder, preferring mussels, scallops and clams but will eat almost anything it can find, including fish eggs, sea squirts, dead fish and fish waste. The seastar is also considered a mariculture pest, settling on scallop longlines, spat bags, mussel and oyster lines and salmon cages. In Japan seastar outbreaks cost the mariculture industry millions of dollars.

A toxic phytoplankton which can cause red tides killing fish and other organisms e.g. whales. Can cause shellfish farm and beach closures. Another similar species causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning.
