1 Your First Teaching Evaluations at UNH: Reading for Learning
New Faculty Academy Your First Teaching Evaluations at UNH: Reading for Learning Victoria Parker, D.B.A., Ed.M., Associate Dean, Graduate Education & Faculty Administration, Paul College

2 How to read Just do it! Read through others’ eyes: where are the red flags? Look for themes in text comments Try your hardest not to take them personally Seek perspective from experienced colleagues who are strong teachers

3 What to do next Be sure you address what is evaluated
Look for actionable & important items e.g. if multiple students can’t hear you, use appropriate technology AND ask if you are audible Be sure you address what is evaluated e.g. clearly state class-by-class objectives Note the changes/improvements you are making Gather more/other data Chair or peer observation mid-semester or instant student feedback

4 Keep in mind…. Quantitative courses tend to get lower, less skewed, more normally distributed ratings Faculty gender also impacts student ratings (see Ben Schmidt’s interactive table) Developing as a teacher is an iterative process; it’s likely to take multiple cycles of feedback & change to achieve improvements
