Responses: what students say they want/appreciated
Sense of belonging and making every student feel welcome Study skills (what do I need for this course?) Well organised subject-related workshops, lectures and taster sessions Get to know their lecturers and academic advisers Make new friends and get to know other students on the course, including existing students – icebreakers, food and social events, eg, Education ‘Sports day', organised by second and third year students Freshers fair – induction needs to be built around it, especially for students at Harcourt Hill campus Shirley
6
Questions to consider How to provide induction opportunities for students who enrol late (particularly affects international students) or who start in the second or third year? How to ensure a planned programme of course specific activities, with something every day? What programme specific social events, with lecturers, ideally food, and possibly subject societies, could be organised? Shirley: belonging
7
Questions to consider How could second and third years be involved in induction? One example would be including subject specific ambassadors in the introductory sessions How to ensure clear lines of communication before and during induction week (especially when some students are unable to access their Brookes account or moodle)? How to include ‘frequently asked questions’ in course information, for example, how to submit coursework? How to organise induction for students on combined programmes? Linet: particular issues
