Objective: Students will analyze the post war relationship between the U.S. and S.U. and be able to describe the uniqueness of the Cold War as measured through their Cornell notes, QW, and discussion.

Setting the Stage WW2= U.S. and Soviet Union were allies against Germany Feb. 1945, Yalta Conference Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill agreed to divide Germany into zones of occupation Uneasiness loomed as the U.S. and S.U. had different goals The start of the Cold War had begun…

The Cold War (1945 – 1991) United States vs. Soviet Union (The two superpowers of the world) A cold war is a struggle over political differences carried on by means short of military action or war Spying, propaganda, diplomacy, and secret operations were used Much of the world allied with one side or the other

Differing Goals: The U.S.
1. Encouraged Democracy in other countries to prevent Communism 2. Rebuild European governments to promote stability and create new markets 3. Gain access to raw materials and markets to fuel it’s booming industries 4. Reunite Germany to stabilize it and increase the security of Europe

Differing Goals: The Soviet Union
1. Encourage communism in other countries 2. Rebuild its war ravaged economy using Eastern Europe’s industrial equipment and raw materials 3. Control Eastern Europe to protect Soviet borders (iron curtain) 4. Keep Germany divided to prevent its waging war again

Iron Curtain Winston Churchill coined the phrase “iron curtain” to represent Europe’s division into mostly democratic Western Europe and Communist Eastern Europe

Soviet Union exploded its own atomic weapon in 1949 Truman wanted a deadlier weapon The hydrogen or H-bomb would be thousands of times more powerful than the A-bomb 1952, the United States tested the first H- bomb 1953, the Soviets exploded their own

Containment President Truman adopted a new foreign policy…
A policy directed at blocking Soviet influence and stopping the expansion of communism Containment policies included forming alliances and helping weak countries resist Soviet advances

Truman Doctrine A speech directed to Congress that asked for aid for Turkey and Greece The Truman Doctrine gave support to countries that rejected communism Congress immediately authorized $400 million in aid to Turkey and Greece

The Marshall Plan Program created by U.S. secretary of state George Marshall This assistance program proposed that the United States give aid to needy European countries. The program would provide food, machinery, and other materials to rebuild Western Europe U.S. spent 12.5 billion
