5 Activity Read a poem by Alice Walker, “Expect Nothing.” Discussion & Analyzing Activity Things to Consider: What is the poem saying? What is it telling you to do? Not to do? What can you take away from this poem? How was it (if in any way) influenced by Alice Walker’s life?

6 “Expect Nothing” Considered to be a “homily” poem which means the author is preaching about something. In short, it means sermon. What figurative language does she use? Simile? Metaphor? Hyperbole? Your heart is referring to a metaphor similar to smallness, and the star would be equivalent to something large. You could also say that "smaller than your heart" and "greater than a star" are poor examples of hyperbole- something that’s over exaggerated.

7 Writing Brainstorm and jot down three ideas about what you would write an advice poem about. After you have down three ideas, pick one of the ideas and write an advice poem to someone. Think in your mind about who you want your audience to be and write to that audience.

8 My Poem College is great, College is fun. Some days are dark, Some days are in the sun. Some people will tempt, And some people will run, But be who you are, And don’t change for anyone.
