Definition of Affirmative Action
Affirmative Action is a program that was established to overcome past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity in education and employment Furthermore, it is an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups or women
3
Affirmative Action Background
Affirmative action actually arose out of a desire to bring more minorities as well as women into institutions and professions that have been traditionally held by white males It first appeared as an attempt to accompany the new legal equality gained for minorities after the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s
4
The First Kind of Affirmative Action
Involved setting racial quotas, deciding on a specific number of a minority group that a company or institution had to accept These quotas did improve diversity, however some people thought applicants should only be judged on their merits
5
Affirmative Action Today
Involves using racial, gender, social /economic background, and sexual orientation status as a guide for hiring or admissions decisions Affirmative action policies are incorporated all around us and all around the world, but for our purpose we will focus on it’s use in the college admissions process
6
Bakke vs. California Allan Bakke, a white male, applied to the University of California and was rejected twice, while minorities with a lower grade average were accepted due to AA quotas The Supreme Court ruled race could be a factor in college admissions, however the use of quotas was not permissible Thus the University of California had discriminated against Bakke by using a 16% minority quota
7
Colleges Today Now public colleges are using other types of affirmative action to increase diversity As long as the colleges don’t use racial quotas they could choose to accept whomever they want Affirmative Action in college admissions has many supporters and opponents so now we will look at both sides
8
The Pro Side of Affirmative Action
Affirmative Action calls for a fair evaluation of candidates by making up for existing social inequalities A diverse student body creates a better learning environment By lowering some standards for the minority group, the university raises the quality of the student body
9
Cons of Affirmative Action
Affirmative action doesn’t lead to true diversity It seems unfair to judge applicants on anything besides their merits Affirmative Action doesn’t help really disadvantaged groups
10
Opinions and Questions
Overall as a group we aren’t arguing one side or another The purpose of this presentation was to give you as a class some basic knowledge and background of Affirmative Action Now Graham and Greg will present a case based on affirmative action
