Earth as a System Please take out ISN Turn to pg.12 Science Warm UP
Tuesday – Sept. 11th Earth as a System Please take out ISN Turn to pg.12 Science Warm UP Tues. 9/11 Describe a situation in which two or more of Earth’s spheres are interacting.
2
ISN 17 – Earth as a System What is a system? A system is any size group of interacting parts forming a whole. Most natural systems are driven by sources of energy that move matter/ or energy from one place to another.
3
Two Types of Systems Open System – energy and matter move in and out of the system Ex: weather system, river system Closed System – energy moves in and out of the system, but matter cannot enter or leave. Cooling system
4
Earth’s Energy Sources
Earth has two energy sources Sun Drives external processes Ex: Weather and climate, ocean circulation, erosional processes Earth’s Interior Continuously generated by decay of radioactive elements Powers internal processes that produce volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountains
5
ISN 16 Volcanic Connections
Working with a partner (or self) Brainstorm how a volcanic eruption can cause changes to the other spheres. How is it a system? (biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere) Draw a picture or create a concept map of your ideas. Include labels for drawings to show connections. Answer question. Don’t forget color!
