3. Literature as Allegory
Write this quote in your binder.
“Literature adds to reality. It does not simply describe it.” – C. S. Lewis
Do authors have an agenda when they write? Do books affect your beliefs or attitudes?
While some pieces of literature are written for entertainment, others do have deeper meanings, and are used to make social/political comments.

4. Literature as Allegory
Write this definition in your binder.
Allegory: A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
Characters often represent an abstract idea, such as charity, greed, or envy, etc.
An allegory is a story with two meanings: a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning.

5. Literature as Allegory
The novel Lord of the Flies is an allegory. Golding uses the story, characters, and themes to explore greater issues of society and humanity. Therefore the characters represent certain characteristics and concepts. When reading the novel, look for both meanings – the literal and symbolic.
One of the main themes of the novel is man’s capacity for both good and evil.

With a partner, read the quotations on the “Good Vs. Evil” chart. Consider each quote thoroughly, and then write a full explanation in the space provided.
