Evacuations ordered in California
2
At least 188,000 people have evacuated on Sunday from several Northern California counties after damage to a spillway at the Oroville Dam. The evacuation notification was issued by the county sheriff as well as the County Office of Emergency Services. The dam, which is the nation's tallest, remains intact. But the emergency spillway, which guards against the overflow of the dam when water levels are high, was eroding Sunday. The damage prompted a mandatory evacuation for cities and counties near Lake Oroville. In the worst case scenario, one official said, an uncontrolled release from the dam could send a 30-foot wall of water downstream. Officials are waiting until daylight Monday to better assess the situation and decide when it's safe for residents to return. California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a state emergency order to help local authorities with the situation and evacuations. Concerns have increased due to heavy rainfall in Northern California this winter which has filled Lake Oroville to the verge of overflow. The lake also gets water from the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range, which is experiencing one of its wettest seasons. Damage to the spillway resulted in a hole that can't be fixed at the moment. It's 250 feet long, 170 feet wide and about 40 to 50 feet deep. The erosion of the spillway is dangerous because when you start to erode the ground, the dirt and everything else starts to roll off the hill. Authorities may have difficult decisions to make -- more rain is in the forecast for Wednesday.

In Other News North Korea launched a test fire of a ballistic missile on Sunday, raising concerns neighboring nations and the US. The medium long-range missile was never a threat to the US, but North Korea still called the launch a success. President Trump learned of the test while he was visiting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. National Security Advisor Michael Flynn is on thin ice after new reports surfaced that Flynn discussed sanctions against Russia with a Russian ambassador -- before Trump became president. That's a huge violation, since he wasn't a government official at the time. Originally, members of the administration including Vice President Mike Pence, defended Flynn, but now even Flynn himself is not denying the allegations. Adele swept the top honors at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Adele went home with five total awards, including album of the year for “25.” Beyoncé also won two, including best music video for “Formation” and best urban contemporary album for “Lemonade.”
