What’s All the (com)MOTION?
Determine a way to describe the motion of the object you are studying. BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE! 1. Determine a way to describe the motion of your car(s). What will you use? How are you going to do it? How many times will you try it? Draw a picture of the motion. 2. Be prepared to share with the rest of the class how you decided to do this.
2
Motion Motion is… The movement of an object through time and space
The change in position of an object over time Speed vs. Velocity Speed – the movement of an object over time Velocity – the movement of an object over time…with direction! What is the class definition for motion?
3
Motion Scalars vs. Vectors
Scalar – a quantity described by magnitude alone Examples: length, mass, temperature, density, volume Vector – a quantity described by magnitude AND direction Examples: velocity, acceleration, force How is a scalar quantity different from a vector quantity?
4
The ability of a system to do work or supply heat
What is the definition for energy? Energy is… Textbook Definition The ability of a system to do work or supply heat Examples: light, heat, electricity It is different from matter because it doesn’t have mass and doesn’t take up space How can we use energy?
5
The study of energy, forces, and motion
Physics is… The study of energy, forces, and motion It also looks at how energy affects matter and how matter affects energy Physics is all around us: -Technology -Biology -Astronomy -Mechanics -Architecture -Travel How does Physics differ from Biology?
6
notes above… Summary: (Think of a summary as what you would tell a friend or relative about what you learned today) Example Starters: “Today, I learned that…” Or… “Motion is ____. Speed is ____. Velocity is ____. They are different because ____.”
