Conjunctive Adverbs Begin independent clauses
Are always followed by a comma Can be used to begin a sentence or to combine two independent clauses. Be careful NOT to create run-on sentences Show relationships between sentences Comparison, contrast, cause/effect, sequence

Usage You are responsible for knowing the following conjunctive adverbs: Consequently, furthermore, also, therefore, however, finally Two correct ways to use conjunctive adverbs: Correct Options: Sara wanted to do well on her test. However, she had no interest in studying. Sara wanted to do well on her test; however, she had no interest in studying.

Combination Example Tony stayed up all night playing video games. Tony could not stay awake in math class the next morning. Tony stayed up all night playing video games. Therefore, Tony could not stay awake in math class the next morning. Tony stayed up all night playing video games; therefore, Tony could not stay awake in math class the next morning.
