Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion Notes
2
Forces are interactions between matter
Forces are interactions between matter. These interactions form a SYSTEM. Forces can interact with matter in two ways: 1.Forces that act at a distance 2.Forces that act when objects touch
3
Can you give an example of types of forces that fit into each category?
4
Forces that act at a distance:
Gravity Electricity
5
Forces that act where surfaces touch
Friction Pushing Bouncing Deforming (changing Shape)
6
Newton noticed what you have noticed- that when force is applied in one direction, there is movement in the opposite direction. He quantified these ACTION and REACTION behaviors and stated them as his third law of motion.
7
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
For every action there is and EQUAL and OPPOSITE reaction.
8
Forces come in Action/Reaction Pairs
An action like pushing on a wall causes you to experience a force that pushes you in the opposite direction the same amount that you pushed in the first place. This is more noticeable if you are wearing roller skates.
9
Can you find the ACTION/REACTION pairs in these systems?
Table 1: water droplet Table 2: Ball in face Table 3: Gun recoil Table 4: Dancer leaping Table 5: Rocket taking off Table 6: Ball bouncing
