Genetic region containing large number of different immune related genes Cell Surface molecules that were first associated with transplantation histocompatibility antigens transplantation antigens Histo = tissue Normal genes that do not rearrange (somatic recombination) MHC genes are expressed co-dominantly (both copies are expressed)

3 Major Histocompatibility Complex
In humans the MHC locus is called the HLA complex and is located on Chromosome 6 In mice the MHC locus is called the H-2 complex and is located on chromosome 17 Each locus is further subdivided into 3 regions: Class I MHC region - Present antigen to CD8+ Cytotoxic T-cells Class II MHC region - Present antigen to CD4+ Helper T-cells (professional APCs) Class III MHC region - Usually secreted proteins such as complement and cytokines
