1 Transformations, Congruence, and Similarity
Unit 1 Transformations, Congruence, and Similarity

2 Congruent vs Similar Figures

3 Congruent Figures Congruent figures have the same shape and same size. The sides and angles have the same measure.

4 Example Are these figures congruent? Why or why not?

5 Similar Figures Similar figures have the same shape but different size

6 You Try On a sheet of paper, draw two examples of similar figures. Be ready to explain why they are similar and not congruent.

7 Introduction to Transformations
A transformation is the movement of a figure/object in the coordinate plane. 4 types: Translation, Reflection, Rotation, and Dilation

8 Pre-Image/Original Image vs. New Image
The original shape of the object is called the pre- image (No primes!) The new shape has primes (Example A’)

9 Introduction to Transformations
easurement/transformation/ Pay attention to the characteristics of the three types of transformations discussed in the video.

10 Rotation KEY WORD: TURN

11 Translation KEY WORD: SLIDE

12 Reflection KEY WORD: FLIP

13 After a translation, reflection, or rotation is performed, figures are still congruent (same shape and size). After a dilation occurs, figures are similar NOT congruent.

14 PRACTICE TIME!!! DRAW A COORDINATE PLANE. BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR X- AXIS AND Y-AXIS. ALSO LABEL YOUR QUADRANTS. First demonstrate the different transformations using the document camera. Pass out shapes and have students practice on their coordinate plane.

15 Identifying Transformations You Try
Determine which type of transformation (rotation, translation, or reflection) is being performed in each problem.
