3 1. The election of 1800 marked the first peaceful transition in power from one political party to another. Election of 1800 – Presidential election: Federalists v. Democratic-Republicans: (John Adams v. Thomas Jefferson) page 267. Federalists want a strong central government ruled by wealthy and educated. Democratic-Republicans wanted strong state governments and the rule of the majority. Rule of the people.
