Why is there CRAAP in my classroom?
Learning Target CCSS W8 Assess the credibility and accuracy of a source. Success Criteria I can explore a website to determine whether the information is accurate and reliable. I realize that just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s true!
2
Is the website you’re using worth your time?
C.R.A.A.P. Test Is the website you’re using worth your time?
3
Current? Date published/vs Date updated When was the site published?
When was it updated? How old is too old? Info is typically at the bottom of a page. Try the Home button too. When looking at the linked website, note that this is an historical event – how much has changed? Is it ok that it hasn’t been updated for a number of years?? What topics would it be important to update more frequently?
4
Reliable? Are the facts correct? What is the evidence?
Does the author list his resources? Does it contain opinion or bias? MLK site: The linked site can be inflammatory! When you glance at it, it looks fine, but upon closer look you will see that the authors are actually a white supremacist group. Is this a reliable source knowing the authors are biased?
5
Authority? Who wrote the page? Who is the publisher or sponsor?
Why are they experts? good authority, why? right click on author’s name is this an expert in the field? even if the data looks good? this website has no author, the website is the authority? How do we know the author is really an authority on the subject?
6
Discussion Questions How do you get your information & news?
Do you believe what you hear? Do you believe what you read? Why? Partners? Table groups?
7
And where do family, teachers and/or friends get their information?
And this is from the kids who actually checked or would admit they made a mistake….
8
Accuracy? Is it credible/true? Or is it fake? How do you know?
Start with believable sources. (databases, library resources) Does the site have a reputation for journalistic integrity? Can you find it on a second site with integrity? Is it on a list of fake news sites? Does it contain opinion or bias? (again) Eiffel tower pictures. True or false? Find out! Snoopdog. True or false? Find out! Start using or to check out Integrity is reputation. Does the site consistently print crap? Or does the site have a REPUTATION for actual, unbiased news. You could take them to SNOPES.com to show them how to look up untrue stories and news.
9
Purpose? inform or selling? Why is this website out there?
Informing or selling? What is the domain extension? .com .edu .mil .org .net .gov Other How might this influence the purpose? inform or selling? BOTH in one. YOU must sort thru…
10
Purposes can vary on one page!
Sponsored content is a give away for advertising/sales….also, anything with a cost or money attached. Only news article is the almond story

Last name A-D Last name E-K Last name L-S Last name T-Z Formative Assessment – after looking at the sites, kids share their findings with the class. Keep to recycle again someday? Currently not working. New, can use if needed: Other dehydrated water. Not currently working: Outside the box?
