My Lai Massacre 16th March 1968 on a Platoon Search and Destroy Mission Led by Lieutenant William Calley Claims the village supported the Vietcong, Calley ordered his men to destroy the village and its inhabitants They consisted of old men, boys, women and children Two hours of torture, rape and murder followed. 500 unarmed villagers were dead News of the massacre leaked out in press in 1969 Calley was found guilty of murder My Lai contributed to the growing anti war movement in America My Lai was seen as a key turning point in the war
