New Jersey Health Information Management Association (NJHIMA) Component State Association (CSA) of AHIMA

2 Background NJHIMA is a nonprofit organization with over 1,700 members. The organization qualifies for charitable tax-exempt status as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Code. The organization was incorporated in 1971 as Medical Record Association of New Jersey, INC.

3 Mission Statement To promote quality health information for the benefit of health care consumers, providers, and other users by supporting the professional development and leadership of NJHIMA members.

Maintain Articles of Incorporation Understand a 501 C organization Follow Bylaws Maintain and follow Policies and Procedures (P&P) Participate in Board Meetings Understand Memberships breakdown Fiduciary duties Membership types New to AHIMA - This introductory membership type is available for up to two years to any individual who has not previously been a member of AHIMA. As a member of AHIMA you are willing to abide by the Code of Ethics and share a common interest in AHIMA’s purpose. Premier - Includes the highest level of AHIMA member benefits and services. Premier members in good standing are entitled to all Premier level membership privileges including the right to vote. As a member of AHIMA you are willing to abide by the Code of Ethics and share a common interest in AHIMA’s purpose. Active - Active members in good standing are entitled to all Active membership privileges including the right to vote. As a member of AHIMA you are willing to abide by the Code of Ethics and share a common interest in AHIMA’s purpose. Student - To be eligible for the discounted Student membership rate a student cannot hold an AHIMA credential or be registered for an exam, and must be currently enrolled in a formal certificate or degree-granting program relevant to AHIMA’s purpose (including, but not limited to, CAHIIM-accredited or PCAP/ACCP-approved coding programs). Student membership is valid for one year from your join date. An individual can be a Student member for up to four years if all eligibility requirements are met. New Graduate - New Grad membership is for AHIMA Student members only. After graduation AHIMA Student members may renew as a New Grad member at the reduced annual dues. This is limited to two years. New Grad members in good standing shall be entitled to all membership privileges including the right to vote. As a member of AHIMA you are willing to abide by the Code of Ethics and share a common interest in AHIMA’s purpose. Emeritus - In recognition of service to the profession, current AHIMA members age 65 and over are eligible for Emeritus membership. Emeritus members in good standing are entitled to all membership privileges available to Emeritus members, including the right to vote. As a member of AHIMA you are willing to abide by the Code of Ethics and share a common interest in AHIMA’s purpose.

Click on Communities, choose My Communities Sign in using your AHIMA ID and Password. Next, click on New Jersey Board. Of Directors or State Leaders and House of Delegates.. Resources are easy to access via the Libraries tab, the resources are arranged under folders. Access ENGAGE Communities New Jersey Board of Directors State Leaders and House of Delegate (HoD) “Officers” can access information related to the House of Delegates (HoD) using the State Leader and House of Delegate community on ENGAGE. The State Leader and House of Delegates (HoD) website contains information such as the delegate calendar, bi-monthly newsletter Use the New Jersey Board of Directors Community on ENGAGE to access files related to NJHIMA including but not limited to Policies and Procedures and Bylaws. Access to this community is by invitation only. Each year, the new President will notify AHIMA with the names of the new board members who will have access to the community. .

9 Board of Directors shall: (P&P Section II-A-3)
Develop Develop policies and procedures to conduct Association business. Implement Implement a strategic plan to meet the needs of the Association and the health information management practitioner. Monitor Monitor officer and committee activities. Address Address issues relevant to health information management practice. Propose Propose changes to AHIMA and NJHIMA Bylaws when necessary to meet the needs of the membership. Conduct Conduct meetings and educational sessions relating to health information, medical record practice and patient rights.

10 Board Meetings Policies & Procedures (P&P) Section II-B-2
The business meeting of the Board of Directors of this association shall be open to the membership and invited guests unless business under discussion requires confidentiality. When the Board of Directors is in session, only those who are members of the Board of Directors may be seated at the meeting table. NJHIMA members or students present should be seated apart from the meeting table. NJHIMA members and students shall have no vote and shall have no voice unless a request is submitted in writing to the President to be put on the agenda prior to the Board of Directors meeting or input is requested at the meeting.
