Rhetorical Devices Rhetorical question: asking a question where the answer is obvious and doesn’t need to be directly answered When a teacher asks a talkative student: “Do you want to teach the class today?” When a parent asks a querulous child: “Do you want me to pull this car over?”

Rhetorical Devices Repetition: when a word, or phrase is repeated in the same words. “I felt happy because I saw the others were happy and because I knew I should feel happy, but I wasn’t really happy.” (Roberto Bolano)

Rhetorical Devices Restatement: Repeating one idea in a variety of ways. For as long as cars have been around, drinking and driving has been a danger. Countless lives are lost to the senseless act of getting behind the wheel drunk. Many families have been torn apart by the consequences of drunk driving. Drinking and driving is never safe.
