7 Observing Stomata Draw the chart below in your Notebook Name of Leaf
Observations Drawing

8 Observing Stomata Discussion Questions
How many stomata does your leaf have? What gases move in and out of the leaf stomata? What does the number of stomata indicate about the rate of photosynthesis for a plant?

9 Let’s look at the process of photosynthesis in general.
Draw a leaf in your notes. What must be present for photosynthesis to occur? Light energy Light energy Water Carbon dioxide Draw these into your notes. Carbon dioxide Enters through stomata Water Absorbed from roots

10 Let’s look at the process of photosynthesis in general.
What is produced during photosynthesis? Light energy Sugar (Starch) Oxygen Oxygen Draw these into your notes. Carbon dioxide Sugar Converted to STARCH Water

11 Use your diagram to write the chemical equation of photosynthesis.
Reactants Products What goes in What is made CO2 +H2O+energy O2 +C6H12O6

12 How do CO2 and H2O get converted into sugar?
Chemical reactions occur inside plant cells! Where? In the chloroplasts.

13 Chloroplasts are specialized organelles to carry out photosynthesis!

14 How does photosynthesis work?
We said plants need energy from the sun. How does it get the energy? Stage 1 Light energy is absorbed by pigments in the thylakoid of the chloroplast.

15 Light-dependent reactions
Stage 2: The light energy absorbed will split H20 into hydrogen and oxygen during the light-dependent reactions and produce ATP. oxygen Light-dependent reactions ATP H2O

16 Light-Independent Reactions
The next set of reactions occurs in the stroma. These are light-independent reactions. Water CO2 ATP Provides energy to run the light independent reaction. Calvin Cycle Light-Independent Reactions ADP glucose

17 3 main stages of photosynthesis
Stage 1 Energy is captured from sunlight Stage 2 Light energy is converted to chemical energy, which is temporarily stored in ATP Stage 3 The chemical energy stored in ATP powers the formation of organic compounds (i.e sugar), using carbon dioxide (CO2)

18 Where is the energy stored? What are the products of photosynthesis?
glucose How many molecules of carbon dioxide does it take to make one molecule of glucose? 6 Where is the energy stored? Chemical bonds of glucose What are the products of photosynthesis? Glucose and Oxygen Where does the oxygen come from? Water (Tricky )

19 SUMMARY Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Chemical Equation for Photosynthesis
What happens during this stage? Where in the chloroplast does it happen? What is produced in this stage? Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Chemical Equation for Photosynthesis
