1 The Christmas Vacation Mishap
Read the story and answer the following question: The Christmas Vacation Mishap The Christmas Season was over and Buddy the Elf decided to take a vacation to Hawaii.  When Buddy told Mrs. Claus about his vacation, she gave him a list of items he needs to bring to the pool because she knew Buddy has never left the cold North Pole.  In her list, she told Buddy he needed swimming trunks, suntan lotion, and a towel.  Buddy was very excited and went straight to the pool when he arrived in Hawaii.  Silly Buddy the Elf put his swimming trunks on over his elf uniform!  He laid his towel in the swimming pool, jumped in, and then put his suntan lotion on.  Buddy could not figure out why everyone was laughing at him! Write five sentences telling what Buddy did wrong on his first trip to Hawaii and what he needs to do to fix it.

2 Order Of Operations

3 Common Core Standard Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

4 First, copy the problem EXACTLY.
When you have more than one operation in a math problem, you must solve it following the correct ORDER OF OPERATIONS. First, copy the problem EXACTLY.   2. Then go through each level of operations: Parentheses Exponents Multiply or Divide Add or Subtract Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally 3. Do the operations within each level from left-to-right. 4. Write the answer directly below the operation sign. 5. Do not 're-use' any numbers.

5 Example Problems 3 + 4 * 6 = Click on your answer: 42 27 13
Please solve this problem on separate paper then follow the instructions based on your answer. You may find it helpful to double-check that you have copied the numbers and symbols exactly as they appear before you begin your computation. 3 + 4 * 6 = Click on your answer: 42 27 13

6 Order of Operations Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Parentheses
Go Back (Innermost, first) (from LEFT-to-RIGHT) Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Parentheses Exponents Multiply or Divide Add or Subtract When you have more than one operation in a math problem, you must solve it following the correct ORDER OF OPERATIONS: First, copy the problem EXACTLY. Then go through each level of operations (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally). Do the operations within each level from left-to-right. Write the answer directly below the operation sign. Bring down the other numbers (be careful not to re-use any). Continue until all operations are completed.

7 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Correct! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please copy and solve this problem on your paper: * = Click on your answer: 10 18 38

8 Not quite Remember that Multiplication and Division are completed before Addition and Subtraction. 5 + 3 * 4 = = 17 / 3 = 7 + 4 = 11 8 - 2 * 3 = 8 - 6 = 2 / 5 = 10 - 3 7 EXAMPLES: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carefully copy and solve this problem on your paper: Click on your answer: 42 27 13 3 + 4 * 6 =

9 Click the button for the correct answer
Your answer shows that you correctly added the quantities. However, not all the operations signs were addition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please copy and solve this problem on your paper: 4 + 5 X 2 = Click the button for the correct answer

10 In arithmetic, multiplication is shown by using the "times sign":
The correct answer is 14. In arithmetic, multiplication is shown by using the "times sign": 7 X 8 In algebra, letters, such as 'x', are used to represent unknown quantities. Therefore, to avoid confusion, multiplication will be indicated by parentheses: 7(8) or by use of an asterisk: 7 * 8 ~~~~~~~~~ Please copy and solve this problem on your paper: 6 + 4 * 3 = 18 30

11 Not Quite…. Remember that Multiplication and Division are completed before Addition and Subtraction. 5 + 3 * 4 = = 17 / 3 = 7 + 4 = 11 8 - 2 * 3 = 8 - 6 = 2 / 5 = 10 - 3 7 Now go back and try to calculate the correct answer      Go Back

12 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Correct! Moving right along.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please carefully copy and solve this problem on your paper. Remember to follow the correct order of operations: 5 + 3(6 + 4)= Click on your answer: 35 39 80

13 Almost!!! After completing Multiplication and Division, do Addition or Subtraction as you come to it working from left-to-right. ~~~~~ Please copy this problem carefully and think about the correct order of operations as you work. * = Click on your answer: 10 18 38

14 Close You worked correctly from left to right BUT remember that My Dear comes before Aunt Sally. You must look for (and complete) all the Multiplication and Division before any of the Addition or Subtraction. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please copy this problem on your paper. Before you begin solving it, think about what to do first. * = Click on your answer: 10 18 38

15 Click the button for the correct answer
Exactly!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now carefully copy and solve this problem on your paper: 36 - 2(3 + 5) + 6 = Click the button for the correct answer

16 Higher Order Thinking Problem
The annual enrollment fee per year at a fitness club (fixed cost) is $30. You also pay $2 per visit (variable cost), and you visit the club 8 times per month. What is your total annual cost? Click the button for the correct answer

17 The correct answer is $222 2*(8*12) Variable cost times total visits
(8*12) Total annual cost 222 Your total annual cost is $222 We are now going to work in our groups: Group 1- Algebra books Group 2- Worksheet Group 3- Journals

18 The correct answer is 26. Click for Higher Order Thinking Problem .
Remember: When you have more than one operation in a math problem, you must solve it following the correct ORDER OF OPERATIONS: First, copy the problem EXACTLY. Then go through each level of operations (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally). Do the operations within each level from left-to-right. Write the answer directly below the operation sign. Bring down the other numbers (be careful not to re-use any). Continue until all operations are completed.

19 After you complete an operation, the numbers you already used disappear:
10 + 2(4 + 5) = 10 + 2(9) 28 Notice that the answer is written directly below the operation sign, and the numbers used are removed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please copy and carefully solve this problem on your paper: 5 + 3(6 + 4) = Click on your answer: 35 39 80

20 Aha, a trap! You know that Multiplication and Division are completed before Addition and Subtraction; apparently you didn't notice the multiplication in the problem -- but it was there waiting to trip you up! Remember: Multiplication can be shown without using an actual multiplication symbol: 4(8) = 4 * 8 = 4 X 8 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now please copy and solve this problem with care: 5 + 3(6 + 4)= Click on your answer: 35 39 80
