2 In the beginning.. In 1939 President Franklin Roosevelt received a letter from Albert Einstein on the possibility of a fission bomb In 1943 Roosevelt decided to test Einstein’s theory

3 In the beginning.. He assembled an elite group of scientists and gave the project the code-name Manhattan Project. On July 16, 1945 the first Atomic bomb was tested in the New Mexico desert.

4 The Decision On July 24, 1945, Truman sent an ultimatum to Japan stating that if they didn’t surrender they would be swiftly destroyed.

5 The Decision The Japanese rejected the deal not knowing U.S. had the bomb. On August 5, Little Boy was loaded into the Enola Gay.

6 Little Boy Little Boy was the code name for the first Atomic bomb.
Little boy was a 9,000 pound uranium bomb

7 Little Boy The bomb contained the equivalent of 20,000 tons of dynamite. On August 6, at 2:45 a.m. Enola Gay departed on it’s historic mission.

8 Hiroshima The Enola Gay arrived at Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m.
Little boy exploded at 1,850 feet above, reaching a temp as high as 7,200 Fahrenheit.

9 Hiroshima A shock wave equivalent to 12,500 tons of TNT was created by Little Boy. 80,000 Japanese & 23 U.S. prisoners of war died within an hour of the explosion

10 The Announcement The news that the Atomic bomb had been dropped was known 16 hours later in America when President Truman made this radio announcement:

11 Fatman On August 9 the U.S. dropped another bomb on Nagasaki
This bomb was called Fatman

12 Japan Surrenders At noon on August 15 Japan’s own radio waves light up with their emperors voice announcing that Japan surrenders to the Allies and that the war was finally over.
