1 Focus Question: What role did the federal government play in the Civil Rights Movement?
Do Now: Answer questions 1-2 on today’s handout.

2 Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954)
One of the most important Supreme Court cases in history. Ruled that school segregation is illegal (a violation of 14th Amendment rights). Rejected the idea of “separate but equal” from the Plessy v. Ferguson case. Was a spark that gave rise to the Civil Rights Movement.

3 Federal actions regarding African-American rights:
1789: Constitution written – slavery remains legal 1858: Dred Scott case – declares that slaves have no rights 1865: 13th Amendment – slavery ends 1868: 14th Amendment – equal rights for all citizens 1870: 15th Amendment – voting rights for black men 1896: Plessy case – segregation remains legal 1954: Brown case – school segregation declared unconstitutional
