OVERVIEW
Purpose
Developed to provide a single exam that supports the Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation program and DoD mandatory separation history and physical exam.
The process makes the information available to both the DoD and VA.

3. Any member separating MUST complete a SHPE prior to release from AD.
Who is it for?
Any member separating MUST complete a SHPE prior to release from AD.
(Reserve and National Guard members who have served a min. 180 days on AD or 30 days in a contingency operation)

4. Who does it?
VA will conduct the exam for individuals that file a application for disability compensation while having at least 90 days remaining AD.
DoD will conduct the exam for individuals that do not file a application for disability compensation, or who file a claim with less than 90 days remaining AD.

5. Document medical concerns & access current health status
What is it for?
Provides a medical evaluation at separation that will help with the following:

DoD can use results to identify possible exposures and hazards in the workplace

6. Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD)
If you're applying for VA benefits prior to separation through the BDD, the disability exam will be a Separation Health Assessment and will meet the SHPE requirement.

7. Service Treatment Records (Medical and Dental records)
Maintained with the appropriate DoD authority, such as the members medical department or Military Treatment Facility. This is a requirement for future VA benefits and failure to do so could affect future benefits.
