Prep slides GRE TF W. Schlager (representing GTB WG Light Sources)

2 5.1 Substitutes and Retrofits
Current status-quo - unregulated: Only non-approved light sources available to consumer Strong market demand for LED technology in the aftermarket RISK: traffic safety (wrong colour, unsafe photometry, etc) Substitute is the solution in a “dual-approved” device mounted in a Substitute-approved vehicle “Dual” = homologated with Filament and Substitute light source Substitute can replace filament light source without any additional measures and vice versa ( equivalent light performance  safe performance) RISK: mis-use in non-approved vehicles Solutions: marking, colour coded keying, … Retrofit is the solution in a “filament-only-approved” device mounted in a filament-only- approved vehicle Retrofit can replace filament light source ( equivalent light performance  safe performance) RISK: it may not function in some specific situations OBD, respectively failure detection system, if present Dimmed dual-function use of light source (e.g. Front Position/DRL) Extensive heat via halogen heat source near-by (e.g. right above LB) Solution: marking, user information, positive list, regulated failure detection … Both, Substitutes and Retrofits fulfill the equivalence criteria

3 7.3 Confidence-building measures
“Equivalence Criteria” are a strong tool to ensure safe photometric performance and provide high level of confidence what additional measures are needed?

4 The “Equivalence Principle”
… and testing at elevated ambient temperature !

5 The outcome of all considerations
Parameter R37 info Solution on-top-measure remark cap yes same x max. outline el . connector test voltage lum. Flux color LCL Intensity distr. no, implicitly given min/max specs defined for all relevant directions LEA box similar, min. light from box LEA homogen. similar, min. homogen. in box el. Power max. <1/3 of R37 value, plus fix max. current min-max range plus failure-max. current enables safe tuning of vehicle system - technology benefit of LEDs ! - 1/3 power leads to same cap temp. el. Power min. fix min. current failure behavior fix max. current in failure case min. voltage range min. flux at 9V-drop defined exclude the dimming use in dual-functions spectral content limit white to <=3000K  Note: 3000K limit basically only needed for categories, which COULD be mounted in red/amber functions thermal behaviour n.a. - 1min/30min spec - test at elevated amb. T exclude the use right above HP-Halogen thermal topic is relevant for LEDs

6 Slides with details following …

7 To develop a new category sheet for a R128 substitute / retrofit
Measure filament lamps (R37) Analyze R37 category sheet Define equivalence requirements (R128) Submit equivalence report Additional: Measure in luminaire(s)? – what is the target?

8 Far-field: emission characteristic

9 Near-field: Lum. Flux out of box

10 Near-field: homogeneity over box

11 Thermal situation at the cap

12 Spectral Power Distribution of “white”
Red filter  mainly flux decrease Amber filter  mainly color shift
