Remember our Objective
We will identify the author’s point of view and trace the argument and claims in the text.
7
“Rethinking Sleep” Today we will be re-reading our article to pull out the Reasons/Claims and Evidence that Randall uses. Before doing so, lets answer a few Text Dependent Questions.
8
“Rethinking Sleep” What does David K. Randall want you to know after reading the first paragraph? How is the first paragraph of the text different than other texts we have read in this unit? Why does Randall choose to begin his text this way? What constitutes deep sleep? How is it different from other kinds of sleep? What is the difference between ‘traditional sleep cycles’ and the kind of sleep that Randall is promoting?
9
“Rethinking Sleep” What is Randall’s argument?
Jot the argument in one sentence across the top of the graphic organizer. What is one reason (claim) he gives for this argument? What evidence supports that reason (claim)?
10
“Rethinking Sleep” Write the Reason (claim) and the Evidence that supports it on your “Analyzing Randall’s Argument” chart. Continue working to complete the remainder of the chart.
11
Closure Whip Around: What are some of the claims or reasons Randall used make to support his argument?
