There is one kind of extravagance rapidly increasing in this country, which, in its effects on our purses and our habits, is one of the worst kinds of extravagance; I mean the rage for travelling, and for public amusements. The good old home habits of our ancestors are breaking up— it will be well if our virtue and our freedom do not follow them!
Challenge: find a technique that is actually ironic and makes her look silly.

7. Model: Overall, Child creates a viewpoint that is shallow based on ”old” traditions and archaic ways of thinking.
Child isn’t fair to people who might want to spend on travelling, “extravagance” seems like a strong emotive word that is ludicrous, because wanting to learn more about culture is a basic human nature and “rage” for travelling seems over-exaggerated and shallow-minded. Child’s views are closed with “good old home habits”, the words “good” and “old” are actually an oxymoron which is ironic because “old” is usually not linked to anything good, but out-of-date and the words “home” shows she never looks past her own walls “habits” shows she is cut-off from realities around her.

Child has an unfair view of working class. “mechanics…take a peep and a peek at the opera house”. The verbs “peep and peek” are alliteration but shows her naïve, ignorant attitude that working-class men are childish and immature. I think this is unfair and an ignorant attitude to have.
