Each element emits a characteristic pattern of bands of light. These patterns of bands are used to identify the elements

Emitted Light: Why? Electrons around an atom can be found in different “shells” Each shell has its own energy level Close to the nucleus = low energy Far from nucleus = high

Emitted Light: More… When “energized” electrons can jump up to higher energy level shells When they move back down they give off some energy as light
