1 CH 2-5 Drawing “Zig-Zag” Structures
Zig-zag structures (also called bond-line) are the simplest and fastest way to represent and draw organic molecules. The “parent” carbon chain is drawn as a zig-zag line, where each line represents a covalent bond. Each bend or terminus of a line represents a carbon atom, unless some other atom or group is shown. No Cs or Hs are shown, except occasionally for substituent groups such as a –CH3, -OH, -NH3, etc. The number of Hs are inferred such that each atom has the normal number of covalent bonds.
