What is identity? The term identity has a wide range of meanings
Two types of identity we frequently refer to include: Personal identity: the idea you have of yourself as a unique individual Collective identity: one that you share with other people as a member of a larger social group, such as linguistic, faith, cultural or ethnic group

Aspects of identity Beliefs and values can influence our behavior and choices and guide us in our interactions with others Ideology also influences a person’s identity. An individual might embrace a particular ideology because it mirrors certain beliefs and values about the world the individual already has. Once people consciously embrace an ideology, it may cause them to re-examine and reinterpret their own lives according to the principles of that ideology.

Culture Language Religion and Spirituality Environment & Relationship to the Land Gender Media Ideology Using pages in your textbook, explain with an example how each of these factors influences the formation of beliefs and values.

Collectivism: ideology that places the needs of the collective (group) before any member of the group Ex: cooperation, sharing of wealth/resources, well-being of others Individualism: values the individual above a whole group Ex: private property, competition, law should protect individual rights

Your task: Read the sections on “The influence of Political Movements: The Famous Five, Kuwait, and Women’s Suffrage” and “Beliefs and Values Reflected in the Canadian Constitution” – pages 19-23 For each example, decide if it is an ideology of collectivism or individualism.
