Issue #1: Health and wellness publication “Allen County Health Risk and Community Needs Assessment”.
70% of Allen County adults are overweight or obese (2nd highest in the state)
53% of Lima citizens reside in a food desert
Goal: expand public access to fresh produce and healthy food options
Problem #2: Vacancy and abandonment. There are hundreds of vacant lots, many within the City of Lima with great potential for reuse.
More than 1,000 lots within city deemed “visually vacant” by inspectors in 2015
Land Bank demolished 245 dilapidated since 2016 leaving vacant lots
Goal: develop and implement a viable reuse strategy for vacant parcels

2017 Connect and Collaborate Grant to support increased and strengthened stakeholder engagement and formulation of a plan.
Second CnC grant in 2018 for $43,500 to provide support for a phased food systems implementation strategy, to create a ”food and entrepreneurship lab” and community garden.
Private sector (hospital) commitment towards the project of $55k
An undergraduate research grant to hire a student worker, for $3,500. Student handles surveys and some of the ground work for the project.
Grant expectations include replicating the program in other counties.

Outreach & Education Efforts
Since October 2017, OSU researchers have held over 30 team meetings and 8 stakeholder planning sessions with a dozen stakeholder groups/representatives.
The group has presented the program at one national and three state and a few county venues.
Three community outreach events to distribute flyers, display project boards and survey residents. Over 300 residents responded, expressing support for the project. Community interest in food related activities; education and distribution at the site. Also exercise classes.

Other Lessons Learned
Leverage strategic cross-displinary partnerships including CURA and private sector
Need continuous stakeholder communications
Funding opportunities are numerous and sources both private and public
Local partners often have similar (health and wellness) but sometimes also competing (economic development vs. neighborhood development) interests
Food systems projects are popular but may lack leadership and sustainability can be a struggle
Student and volunteer help can assist in implementing Land Bank reuse projects
