Rebellions were not common but did happen
The most well know slave uprising was led by Nat Turner in 1831 About 40 slaves killed about 60 whites Local militia put down the rebellion but Nat Turner escaped He was captured 6 weeks later, tried and found guilty of murder and hanged

Slave owners blamed abolitionists for “stirring up” the slaves
Many southern states created or strengthened “Slave Codes” (laws that only apply to slaves) Could not assembly in groups of more than five Could not own property Could not testify in court Could not hit a white person Could not learn to read or write Could not conduct a religious service without a white person present
