Native vitamin D is obtained through food or the skin. It is hydroxylated in the liver to form 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). It is then hydroxylated by a 1-α-hydroxylase enzyme in the kidney to form 1,25(OH)2D. Alternatively, 25(OH)D can be hydroxylated to form 1,25(OH)2D by other cells. This 1,25(OH)2D is used in an autocrine manner for internal regulation of the host cells DNA.
