How to answer Quality of Written Communication questions
It is not an essay The aim of these questions is test how clearly you can express your answer in a written form. This may NOT always be in sentences and paragraphs. You might used tables, diagrams or even code, you will be given marks for choosing the most appropriate method. If you do use sentences & paragraphs you don’t need to include a beginning, middle and end unless the question asks for it.

2. It is not a test of your spelling, punctuation and grammar The examiner will need to see an answer to the question that has been asked, they will NOT be marking your English. But be careful mistakes could mean you lose marks if they effect the understanding of your answer.

3. You must use technical terms accurately Many of the answers will need to contain computing terms that you have learnt during the course. You will gain marks if the examiner can see that you have used these terms correctly. You will not need to explain the terms unless the questions asks you to do so.

4. Answer the question fully This is the MOST important point. Questions like these often have many parts to them. They are testing how well you present your answer. You must answer ALL the parts of the question to gain full marks. Identify the things you need to answers and then keep checking back that you have answered each part.

You also need to explain why the town needs the system to be reliable.
In this example you are asked to explain what reliability is using examples from the traffic light system. You also need to explain why the town needs the system to be reliable. You need to answer BOTH parts of the question to gain the higher marks. Possible answers – give it a go you should spend approx 10 mins

Style 1 Reliability involves consistent performance, for example the hardware should perform well under all weather conditions. The system should be robust and should not crash easily or often. Recovery systems should be in place so that if it does crash it can recover quickly from backups and redundant servers etc. Or Style 2

Or Style 2 Style 1 The importance of reliability can be judged by the extent to which the traffic in the town is affected and potential dangers caused by malfunction and the consequences of an unreliable system such as; loss of income for the people in the town or the council becoming unpopular.
