4 Breathing in and out Breathing is controlled by the respiratory centre of the hindbrain. This area controls the movement of the diaphragm, a muscular sheet which seals the thorax. When the diaphragm contracts, it pulls the lungs downwards and air is forced into the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles. When the diaphragm relaxes, the air is forced out of the lungs and the cycle repeats itself.

6 The Trachea The trachea (also called your windpipe) is the tube that connects your mouth to the tubes that go into your lungs. At the top of the trachea is your larynx (voice box). The tube is surrounded by rings of cartilage to stop it from getting crushed. The trachea splits into two main tubes – the bronchus. They divide into smaller tubes called bronchi.
