Re-read The Gun Scene with Stanhope and Hibbert
Discuss and support or challenge the following readings of this section of the play…. The audience lose sympathy for Stanhope at this point, as his Sherriff depicts him as cruel and insensitive. Sherriff cannot appear to sympathise with Hibbert’s fear; he ensures that any sympathy created for the character is lost later in the play. It is not Hibbert who Stanhope is angry with – it is his recognition of the injustice of a war that can affect men in this way.
