1
Aim: How do we use Newton’s equation of Motion to explain free fall?
2
Free Fall On Earth, all objects accelerate downwards at -9.8 m/s2 regardless of mass.
3
Acceleration due to gravity on the moon
On the moon, all objects accelerate at -1.6 m/s2 downward.
4
Example 1- Body dropped from rest.
A basketball is dropped from a building that is 45 m tall. Calculate the time it takes the basketball to hit ground. Calculate the velocity with which the object strikes ground.
5
Problem 2 Curious George drops from a fourth-story window 15.0 m above the ground. How long does it take George to hit the ground? With what velocity does George strike the ground?
6
Problem 3 If I drop a watermelon from the top of one of the tower dorms at CSU, and it takes 3.34 seconds to hit the ground, calculate how tall the building is in meters.
7
Example 4-Projectile thrown downwards
A banana is thrown downwards with a velocity of 7 m/s. If the banana strikes the ground after 4s, How tall is the building? With what velocity does the banana hit the ground?
8
Free Fall Tabular Approach
Create a table showing the position and velocity of a skydiver after each second (for 5 seconds. (Neglect air resistance)
