1 7. CPR & AEDs When do you perform CPR on a casualty?
What is the procedure? What is an AED and how do you use one?

2 CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
Checked the area is safe to enter? Put on gloves? Said ‘Hello’ and told them your name? Told them to open their eyes? Sharp shoulder tap? SHOUT FOR HELP !! Opened their airway? Checked breathing for 10 seconds? (listen ,look, feel) STOP HERE – BEGIN CPR Checked hollows for bleeding? Checked capillary refill? CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) Top priority is getting help and requesting an AED. If you are on your own and have no phone, leave them!! They are unlikely to recover without defibrillation – CPR is just to keep them alive and does not fix the problem. If you can call for help (999) or have someone else who can get help and an AED, then start CPR Do this if a casualty is unresponsive and not breathing or breathing is very abnormal…. Less than 1 in 10 What is the survival rate for those needing CPR? 1 in 10 1 in 5 1 in 2

3 Step 1 (up to 7 mins)

4 Step 2 (7 to 9 mins)

5 Repeat 30 compressions and two rescue breaths (keep going).
If you’d rather not give rescue breaths then call 999 and deliver hands-only CPR. That’s better than doing nothing. Keep going until professional help arrives and takes over, or the person starts to show signs of regaining consciousness, such as coughing, opening their eyes, speaking, or breathing normally. If you’re feeling tired, and there’s someone nearby to help, instruct them to continue. Person A – 30+2 twice, then disinfect Person B – 30+2 twice, then disinfect Call – Push – Rescue their chest breaths
